challenge

Mitsubishi Electric, a heat pump manufacturer and long-standing clients of Brands2Life, asked the Public Affairs team to help them to shape the best possible environment for the adoption of heat pumps.

They wanted to drive public perception of the technology, and encourage government policies which support consumers to choose to switch to a heat pump.

Approach

Relying initially on owned insight, we created a position paper to share public perception of heat pumps with policymakers in Westminster.

This was very successful, leading to meetings across Whitehall and with key parliamentarians. We then moved to providing a full public affairs programme to promote Mitsubishi Electric’s aims, centered around their key policy asks around the decarbonisation of both commercial and residential buildings.

Given the public support, and clear need, for net zero, we quickly begun to build a coalition of support around Mitsubishi Electric’s asks. The general election in July 2024 also provided a great opportunity to educate a new class of parliamentarians on the benefits of heat pumps, and decarbonised heat more generally. But we knew to have the greatest impact, we would need to wrap Mitsubishi Electric’s views in those of a wider group.

Wera Hobhouse MP

To do this, we convened a parliamentary roundtable attended by a wide range of key stakeholders and chaired by Wera Hobhouse MP. The output of this roundtable will form the basis of the next stages of our campaign.

IMPACT

  • We built strong relationships across Westminster and Whitehall, and have held discussions at the highest level including 10 Downing Street and the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero about what measures need to be put in place to support the uptake of heat pumps.
  • From this, we have seen a number of positive steps forward, and the new Government has a clear commitment to driving this agenda forward through their Warm Homes Plan. We look forward to continuing to work with them to ensure that this provides the best possible environment for decarbonising all types of buildings.
