With the global food system being responsible for over one-third of global greenhouse gas emissions, ensuring it moves towards decarbonisation is critical – and there is a clear role for policymaking to deliver these changes.
However, while the Labour government made an election promise to achieve net zero, there remains scrutiny on balancing ambitious climate goals with the economic pressures facing the UK. With challenges confronting the entire food value chain, from farm to fork, Tetra Pak sought to ensure such commitments remained on the political agenda.
We recognised that we needed to amplify these concerns to two of Tetra Pak’s key audiences – the industry, including its customers, and policymakers.
Tetra Pak asked us to arrange two events; a panel discussing “Where are the limits of industry efforts? The role of policy in decarbonising the food value chain and ensuring food security” and a smaller, parliamentary dinner “The ‘Hidden Middle’: How can we strengthen the food value chain between the farm and fork?”.
The panel event brought together stakeholders from across the food value chain, including its customers, while the dinner brought together MPs. Both events focused on the critical role of policy and how government can partner with industry to deliver solutions.
This approach allowed us to target a broader set of stakeholders on the same topic through tailored formats. The panel event allowed Tetra Pak to showcase its expertise and build consensus across the food value chain, while the dinner provided an intimate setting to engage directly with policymakers. By engaging both groups, Tetra Pak has been able to shape policy discussions more effectively, ensuring that its insights on decarbonisation and sustainable packaging are integrated into the evolving work of both the industry and policymakers.
The events expanded Tetra Pak’s advocacy network. They were attended by more than 60 industry stakeholders and 8 MPs, including Daniel Zeichner MP, Minister of State for Food Security and Rural Affairs, who delivered a keynote at the panel event.
Successfully engaging the wider industry as well as MPs in discussions about food security and sustainability, Tetra Pak has positioned itself as a convening power in policy-focused discussions around decarbonisation.
The events provided further content for future thought leadership, while ongoing relationships will be pursued with the connections made through the activity, supporting Tetra Pak’s ongoing advocacy agenda.
