The Rise of Indie Journalism

How tech brands can navigate – and benefit from – the shift to independent media

Independent journalism has entered its breakout era. Platforms like Substack, Ghost, and beehiiv are no longer niche. They’re shaping the tech news cycle. Veteran reporters are leaving legacy outlets, building influential newsletters, amassing loyal audiences and in some cases, even launching full-fledged newsrooms. Their work is deeper, slower, more trusted and increasingly powerful.

Over several months, we tracked 32 tech journalists who left traditional media to build independent publications. We analyzed publishing patterns, subscriber growth, platform economics, top coverage themes, and the growing institutional credibility behind this movement. The findings are clear: independent creators are becoming one of the most important and overlooked channels for reaching early adopters, investors, engineers and policy leaders.
