Instagram turns 6
It’s been six years since Instagram was initially released to the public on 6th October 2010. The founders Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger couldn’t possibly have imagined their idea could be worth over $1 billion and boast over 500 million monthly active users, just a handful of years later. To celebrate the app’s sixth birthday, we’re bringing you six exciting facts about Instagram.
1. The first post ever
Photographed by Mike Krieger, CEO and co-Founder of Instagram this shot was taken overlooking a marina. It’s heavily filtered highlighting Instagram’s functionality.
2. Going, going, gone to Facebook… for $1 billion
Facebook bought Instagram for $1 billion just 18 months after it launched. This was made up of $300 million in cash and the rest in Facebook shares. Impressive right? Especially considering Instagram only had 13 employees at the time.
3. We #love hashtags
Hashtags were introduced a couple of months after Instagram launched. Since then #love has become the most used hashtag with over 922 million posts. This is followed by #instagood with 476 million and #photooftheday with 348 million.
4. Over 95 million photos and videos are posted each day
From Instagram owned apps such as Boomerang, Layout and Hyperlapse, to the recent introduction of Instagram Stories, each Instagram update has given users new and exciting ways of creating content. As it’s so easy to share, it’s no surprise that over 95 million photos and videos are uploaded each day.
5. Big star + big brand = Instafame
With 5.6 million likes and 212 thousand comments, this Coke endorsement by Selena Gomez is the most popular post to date. Getting a top celebrity to post about your brand on their social accounts can come with a big price tag though – Gomez is rumoured to charge around $550,000 per post.
6. Kanye West reached 1 million followers in a day
After declaring that he was getting rid of his mobile phone so he could “have air to create”, Kayne West just one week later joined Instagram. He’s racked up over 1 million followers in five days and with only one post. He’s still got a way to go though, considering his wife’s 83.2million followers.
